"Delivering a lecture on “The life and works of Sir CV Raman” at the Tamil Virtual Academy on Saturday, Rao said Raman saw former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s emphasis on ‘useful applied research’ as misplaced."
“Raman argued that fundamental science needed to be insulated not just from government, industrial and military pressure, but even from instructional pressure,” said Rao. When Nehru called for scientists to step out of their ivory towers, Raman told him men in ivory towers mattered the most, as they were the ‘salt of the earth’ to whom humanity owned existence.
