There has been a mushrooming of deemed universities of late. You have found some of them not up-to-the-mark.

I have directed that new approvals (for deemed universities) be frozen. It is necessary that deemed universities operate in a transparent manner- they should have websites where details of faculty, equipment, student-teacher ratio etc. are given.

It is not that all deemed universities — there are 130 of them including 35 in the government sector—are not conforming to acceptable standards. There are only a few black sheep. We may have to undertake review of some 15-20 such institutions and ensure that they adopt necessary structural reforms.
